future computing or say.. ubicomp
June 18, 2009 at 8:28 am | In future | 3 CommentsWhat is future of our everyday life? As technology has increased, designers are going hand in hand with technology & building useful products, applications & services, what our future says!! Tomorrow computers will be no more computers, they will be in form of small chips embeded in our everyday life objects, making our life simpler & easier. We will be always connected, to doctor for health issues, friends, unknown people, colleagues & our loved once. For sure there are privacy issues, but future of computing seems like this:
“Physicist and futurist Michio Kaku discusses the idea of Ubiquitous Computing. He describes it as “an invisible intelligent network hidden in our walls, our furniture, even our clothing.”

you know its pretty amazing – this obsession with the future of Ubiquitous computing! These are the same prophecies that Mark Weiser predicted the future of 21 century computing, based on his own works in Xerox PARC, way back in 1989!!! ( ACM Link: http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=329124.329126&coll=Portal&dl=GUIDE&CFID=33868574&CFTOKEN=26649809 )
The researchers still talk about how technology will be ‘invisible’ ’seamless’, ‘calm’ in the few years to come – the same sentence that Weiser said about 20 years back!!!
But if we look around, ubicomp is already here! Its messy, not invisible, not at all calm – and one of the form is the mobile phone.
By saying that the future technological infrastructure will be invisible and calm, we are just putting the responsibility on some one else… isnt it?

I didnt understand when you say “we are putting responsibility on someone else”. I completely agree with Mark Weiser’s saying about future of computing, being seamless, invisible & embedded in everyday life objects. Personally i am interesting in ubicomp which includes embedded systems in everyday life objects & how we can enhance everyday life experience. And thats what people like timo arnall, nicholas nova, hiroshi ishi etc are looking forward to.

I agree and myself am quite excited about the idea to locate digital technology in everyday life. But what I am trying to differ with most of the research agenda of ubicomp is to acknowledge and take advantage of the fact that the everyday life is messy and noisy – and not to try to say I am striving for seamless / invisible computing. The ideal of seamless computing has been there for 20 years now… And even now, most of the research work starts of saying, “in the near future, we will be able to seamlessly…” Thereby, pushing this ideal of seamlessness further in the future. Its almost like saying, we are not able to do it now, but hopefully someone in the future will do it for us
isnt it? It looks like that though. So I take these visions of future with a bit of salt… but I am with you when it comes to the excitement these can generate
