mozilla labs design challenge!!

In collaboration with IXDA & Johnny Holland, Mozilla labs is encouraging a design challenge focused on “reinventing tabs in the browser – how can we create, navigate & manage multiple websites within the same browser instance”

“Tabs worked well on slow machines on a thin Internet, where ten browser sessions were “many browser sessions”. Today, 20+ parallel sessions are quite common; the browser is more of an operating system than a data display application; we use it to manage the web as a shared hard drive. However, if you have more than seven or eight tabs open they become pretty much useless. And tabs don’t work well if you use them with heterogeneous information. They’re a good solution to keep the screen tidy for the moment. And that’s just what they should continue doing.”
Interestingly they have a discussion forum where designs can be discussed & designers can also get feedback of the designs.

We all, designers follow different process for designing product, interaction, experiences etc. Though we are somewhere similar in terms of process, but is there something like so called “ideal” design process. Few months back i have come across some interesting videos of “what is design”. Thought i will share with you guys
This is the one by David Ngo

user generated design!!
May 17, 2009 at 4:58 am | In creative | 2 CommentsTags: ars electronica, fluid forms
How if designers do not design & user only design their products. For sure, sometimes it ends up in mess, but an interesting experience for the user where she can design her own products. A project by Ars Electronica’s FABLAB explores the idea of “fluid forms”

“”Fluid Forms” takes an original approach to implementing the concept of user-generated designs. To accomplish this, a user-friendly tool has been developed that enables anyone to create an individualized lamp or jewelry: a punching bag.
This device is peppered with sensors. Force and position of each blow-and hugs as well-are transmitted to the computer model of the punching bag. Home-brew software then generates the production data for the object
The production is via 3D printing (selective laser sintering) that utilizes a laser and a powder mixture of plastic, metal, ceramic or glass. The laser heats the powder on precisely those points specified by the computer for the production of the lamp. In this way, the object is created layer by layer “

Aardwark!! quick formatting..
April 17, 2009 at 5:48 am | In creative | Leave a CommentSometimes i think, why do we need taglines (something like gmail has). But today it helped me
. My friend Gaurabh Mathure mentioed about Aardwark on his gmail tagline.
” It is a powerful and user-friendly selector utility for selecting elements and doing various actions on them. It can be used for cleaning up a page prior to printing it (by removing and isolating elements), and for web development “
I tried with my blog itself and here is the result.

Here, i have removed “conference phone by kicker” image, highlighted the first paragraph and i can also view the source code of an different section as shown above.
I really liked the idea of “on the move” formatting for which i never have to take a screenshot, edit it in photoshop & print it.
Really interesting move!!
NeuScreen-multitouch using Nokia N95
April 16, 2009 at 6:09 am | In creative, interaction design | Leave a CommentFew months back, Nokia announced a competition “Forum Nokia”. Neuscreen was among the 11 finalist mentioned by Nokia.
NeuScreen has on-screen drawing tool to virtually draw on the TV screen, 3D image manipulation with the ability to rotate and zoom in/out on images, and an image gallery tool that will randomly load pictures from phones gallery for display on the TV. Using this last function of Neuscreen, an individual can move, zoom and rotate pictures with a touch of the screen. There are also options to reload to see new pictures, line-up to place the pictures in order, and a feature called shake for a real surprise. This project was developed by Sittiphol Phanvilai, a Forum Nokia Champion.
Other finalist projects can be seen here.
Nokia’s Go-Green
April 13, 2009 at 5:04 am | In creative, interaction design | 3 CommentsNokia’s beta version of Green Explorer has started in december. It is geared specifically for people who want to travel in an eco-friendly fashion and provide their own travel tips, and the site has quite a few features that can make it a top resource when it comes out of beta.

It has travel news, eco-centered information about destinations, tips from fellow green travelers, easy carbon offsets, mobile device access, and loads more. It is interesting web application they have developed and they are encouraging more travelers to register and put their area information.

Here you can related information about specific country, location, area etc. which is user driven. Everyone can come and put related about the place they want to. The beta version of the website has just started, so they do not have much database created. There is no information related to India. I have just enrolled, so i will put some
sharing through mobile phone!!
April 9, 2009 at 5:20 am | In creative, interaction design | 2 CommentsTags: interaction design, mobile application, sharing
Currently i am working on a project of developing mobile application on “sharing” in conjunction with IIT Bombay & Nokia. We have developed a prototype of designed application which i am sharing with you. The application is focused on
1. location sharing
2. media content sharing (like images, videos & music)
3. activity sharing – share what you do.
through a complete new interface of phonebook. The idea is to share above mentioned contents to your phonebook contacts. These contents are accessed through a 3D phonebook which is shown below. This application is a touch screen application.

Above images show developed 3D phonebook and my contacts. User can rotate the phonebook and customize it according to her priority. For example, user wants frequent call list to show first, she can customize it. In the images, ever horizontal circle represents a group of contacts & user can view the contact list through alphabetical order also through “option” menu.

When i tap on any contact, application shows me different option (top & then clockwise)
1. message 2. address 3.email 4.call 5. share 6. my access 7.more
Message, address, email & call are understood.
Share:
“Share” helps user to share her media contents with any contact. user can share music, images & videos to specific contact or with the entire group of contact.
My Access:
“My Access” is a complete new feature we have introduce. Here, user can go inside any contact and pick up some content. For example, i can go to any contact, go inside his phonebook/music/video etc. and take desired content if contact allows.
More:
“More” helps user to see more information about the contact. Similar way, if user taps twice on the image, application gives more information about the contact. like first name, last name, mobile number, job title, company, birthdate and many more.
Location Sharing:

Location sharing helps user to see her contact’s real time location & permenant address if the contact permits. User can directly chat to the contact from this application itself. It also shows different routes from user’s location to contact location.
Media Sharing:

User can share her media contents like images, videos and music with either individual contact or a contact group. The second screen shows the list of songs which can be shared. Here user can play the song and then share it if she wants as shown in the interface.
Activity Sharing:

User can share about her activity to all his contacts & groups. Activity shared by user is seen when someone calls her. (shown in the image below). These kind of sharing create a new topic of conversation.

here: “palash is in party mood”
Context aware application:
One important thing this application has is “context aware system”. It helps users to understand the context and act accordingly. For example, if some contact is in a meeting and puts his phone on “meeting” mode, system tells caller about his meeting. On the other hand, when contact becomes free, system notifies user that ” your contact is now free and you can call him.”

Like the above image, system tells user that “Megha is free now, call her”. User can directly tap on the message, which calls her.
There might be some changes in some interfaces. I am looking for some feedback from you guys. Cheers!!
