Currently i am working on a project of developing mobile application on “sharing” in conjunction with IIT Bombay & Nokia. We have developed a prototype of designed application which i am sharing with you. The application is focused on

1. location sharing

2. media content sharing (like images, videos & music)

3. activity sharing – share what you do.

through a complete new interface of phonebook. The idea is to share above mentioned contents to your phonebook contacts. These contents are accessed through a 3D phonebook which is shown below. This application is a touch screen application.

3d_phonebook rotate_3d_phonebookrotating_3d_phonebook_2

Above images show developed 3D phonebook and my contacts. User can rotate the phonebook and customize it according to her priority. For example, user wants frequent call list to show first, she can customize it. In the images, ever horizontal circle represents a group of contacts & user can view the contact list through alphabetical order also through “option” menu.

phonebook_option

When i tap on any contact, application shows me different option (top & then clockwise)

1. message    2. address    3.email     4.call     5. share     6. my access    7.more

Message, address, email & call are understood.

Share:

“Share” helps user to share her media contents with any contact. user can share music, images & videos to specific contact or with the entire group of contact.

My Access:

“My Access” is a complete new feature we have introduce. Here, user can go inside any contact and pick up some content. For example, i can go to any contact, go inside his phonebook/music/video etc. and take desired content if contact allows.

More:

“More” helps user to see more information about the contact. Similar way, if user taps twice on the image, application gives more information about the contact. like first name, last name, mobile number, job title, company, birthdate and many more.

Location Sharing:

location_sharing

Location sharing helps user to see her contact’s real time location & permenant address if the contact permits. User can directly chat to the contact from this application itself. It also shows different routes from user’s location to contact location.

Media Sharing:

media_sharing media_sharing_21

User can share her media contents like images, videos and music with either individual contact or a contact group. The second screen shows the list of songs which can be shared. Here user can play the song and then share it if she wants as shown in the interface.

Activity Sharing:

activity_sharingactivity_sharing_2

User can share about her activity to all his contacts & groups. Activity shared by user is seen when someone calls her. (shown in the image below). These kind of sharing create a new topic of conversation.

here: “palash is in party mood”

Context aware application:

One important thing this application has is “context aware system”. It helps users to understand the context and act accordingly. For example, if some contact is in a meeting and puts his phone on “meeting” mode, system tells caller about his meeting. On the other hand, when contact becomes free, system notifies user that ” your contact is now free and you can call him.”

context_aware_app1

Like the above image, system tells user that “Megha is free now, call her”. User can directly tap on the message, which calls her.

There might be some changes in some interfaces. I am looking for some feedback from you guys. Cheers!!

mobile users are mobile!!

There is an interesting discussion going on IXDA mailing list about the context, situation and related activities we need to consider during mobile phone design. Mobile users are mobile. They are continously on the move, in different situation, different context (like personla space, bedroom, public toilets, movie theatre, meeting, wedding and many more) and for sure they have different behaviour according to the context they are in. Lots of things has been mentioned about it which is..

at a cafe/restaurant
in class/meeting
at airport
in line
in bathroom
in front of the television (ESPN mobile spike)
just before going to sleep (Google mobile spike)
upon waking up (HUGE portion of people using phone as alarm clock)

On the train/bus
Driving car
Biking

Light levels and impact on legibility
Cold weather (wearing gloves – not good for iPhone for example)
Speed of walking/running (impacts how mobile devices are carried/stored/used
Privacy (miniature cameras and cellphone cameras are now prohibited in my health club for example)
Size of hand (affect typing)
One handed use
Status
Used for emergencies and design for emergencies
Serves as entertainment center (watch movies, listen to books, play games)
Facilitates interaction with particular people (smartbadges that glow when you approach someone with common interest).
Interaction with non-mobile devices or ambient systems

AND MANY MANY MORE..

mobile-user1

A mobile phone consists of almost everything including camera, music, games, GPS, connectivity, internet, information services and lot more, and behaviour towards these domain changes according to the context. But strange thing is, till now there is no context aware phone in the market which behaves according to the context of user.

An interesting animation representation of first couple chapters of Barbara Ballard’s “Designing the Mobile User Experience” can be seen here..

After a long time, i think !!! Few days back, during a meeting in my office i came accross an application called Mumbai Navigator. Mumbai Navigator helps to find out any bus and train routes by just entering the origin and destination. This application is designed by IIT Bombay.

Also, by entering train name or bus number would lead you to the detail of that particular train or bus number. I found this application very useful for people of Mumbai, as daily lacs of people travel by trains and busess. Currently this application is on the website which does not help people when they are on a move. I am designing the interface of Mumbai Navigator on mobile phones. Some of the initial ideas i am sharing with you, would love to get feedbacks.

The is the very first screen when you open the application. Here you can put your origin and destination in “from” and “to” option. By pressing the “select” button, by default it shows desired trains of chosen route.

“Option” button lets you look at other options like choosing a bus instead of train, also finding route by typing train name/bus number through “find by train name” and “find by bus number”.

This screen pops up when you choose “find by bus number”. Here i have shown some basic screen (though there are lot more) which is still on the design stage, but would like to get feedback from all of you to make it better.
